Tongue Stabilization – finally an effective device to help snoring.

Through the years, my wife, Dianne, has pushed and prodded me to roll on my side to stop my snoring.  I snore less when sleeping on my side, as compared to sleeping on my back or stomach, but I still can snore on my side.  There have been many nights when I woke up to find Dianne sleeping in the guest room to get away from the noise.  So for years we have been looking for an answer to the problem.

I have tried various devices and sprays to help the snoring.  One was a very expensive dental device that had to be fit using dental impressions and then custom-ordered.  It was very bulky in my mouth, made me look like Bucky Beaver, and caused me to gag because of its size.  And worst of all, it didn’t work.   We have also tried MSM throat spray, which gives pleasant astringent sensation to the back of the mouth, but didn’t really help my snoring.  Another homeopathic anti-snoring spray is still unused in my medicine cabinet.

Then three months ago I got a slick marketing pamphlet in the mail about the Aveo TSD® Tongue Stabilization Device.  I usually toss those glossy brochures from drug companies and supplement firms, but this device made physiologic and medical sense to me.  I showed it to Dianne, and she offered to buy me one for my birthday.  She was ready to try anything at this point!  The Aveo TSD is a true FDA-registered medical device available by prescription only.  No problem.  I dialed the 800 number and, as a licensed physician, ordered one as a trial.

The tongue stabilizer arrived quickly, and I was impressed by the compact package and the completeness of the instructions.   The device is made from soft molded medical-grade silicone and is shaped like a baby’s pacifier.  Unlike a pacifier, however, the part that goes in your mouth is a specially-shaped suction cup that goes over your tongue and holds it forward between your teeth.  The thicker silicone portion between your teeth keeps you from biting your tongue.  Suction on the tongue can be set and adjusted by squeezing the outermost portion of the device.  I read the instructions fully, washed off the device, and got ready for bed.

I must admit that I was skeptical that I would tolerate the TSD in my mouth, and was actually embarrassed to have Dianne see me with this “pacifier” in place. So I turned out the light and put it on.  It seemed weird at first, but I decided to stick with it.  After lying there for about fifteen minutes, I suddenly realized that I had become unaware I was even using the TSD.  I moved my lips to check, and sure enough, it was still there.  I rolled over and fell into a deep sleep.  When I awake that morning, the TSD was still in place.  The centers of my lips were a bit numb from the pressure on them during the night, but otherwise I felt GREAT!  I was so rested and relaxed that I could not believe it.  Usually I wake up groggy, but not that morning.  Dianne reported that I had not snored all night.

I have used the TSD faithfully for several months now.  One night I left it off to see what would happen. I slept OK, but awoke with a dull headache, and Dianne said I snored a lot.  Now I use it even during afternoon naps.  When napping on my back, I used to wake up with frank apnea symptoms – gasping for breath every few minutes.  This has not happened once while using the TSD, and now naps are far more refreshing.

Care of the TSD device is simple.  I rinse it in warm water after each use, rubbing the inside and outside gently with my fingers to remove any residues. Then I place it back in my bedside drawer.  That’s it.  No soap, disinfectants, or other hassle.  The one caveat is that alcohol will damage the silicone, so using the TSD after a nightcap is not advised.  Rinsing the mouth thoroughly is recommended to remove any alcohol from the mouth if necessary.  Remember to read the label of your mouthwash.  Old fashioned Listerine is 50-proof alcohol!

So I am sold on the effectiveness and utility of the Aveo TSD.  It sure beats any alternatives that I have tried, and it is definitely simpler, easier, and cheaper to use than a C-PAP machine with its hoses and blower unit. Whether it is as effective as C-PAP has not yet been shown, though I believe it should work well for many with low-grade sleep apnea caused by the tongue falling back and blocking the airway.  Sleep lab studies are needed to verify the effectiveness of the TSD – stay tuned.

In the meantime, we are pleased to offer the Aveo TSD here at Integrative Life Solutions.  The first step is to be fitted with the properly-sized TSD that fits your mouth and tongue.  We have an Aveo TSD fitting kit here at ILSI that I use to select the correct device for each individual.  Then I write the prescription for the appropriate TSD.  The client can then fill the prescription here at ILSI, or can take the prescription to buy the device elsewhere.  We even offer a TSD gift certificate package to give to your spouse if they snore and keep you awake.  The Aveo TSD may be a good gift for the both of you.
