Each of these colors alone, or in concert, are said to have influence over various areas of our body and may affect us differently; emotionally, physically, and mentally, because different areas of our physical body are said to naturally resonate to particular colors, with the overall pattern looking something like a rainbow. And we may be drawn unconsciously, if not knowingly, to colors that may feel "right" for us, because they seem to create greater balance in our lives, offering us frequencies we are depleted of. Modern Light and Color Therapies have evolved with many ways of creating and controling the frequencies of visually colored light we receive. Sunlight, electrically derived light, even candles may be the source of the energy that is then focused through prisms; gems, stained glass, colored plastic etc; to manifest the colored frequencies we desire. And then there are the naturally occuring light frequencies we receive all the time from reflected light, be it from our clothing, the walls of our dwellings, even, some say, the color of the foods we eat. Both engineered and reflected light influence our wellness and balance. Color is a part of life on planet Earth. It surrounds us in every aspect of our lives. We delight in a rainbow, sigh at a sunset, luxuriate in the rich colors of our homes, clothes, special spaces. Our eyes gravitate towards saturated color like moths to the light. No coincidence, considering the entire spectrum of colors is derived from light. And no surprise, really, that seeing, wearing or being exposed to color- whether in the form of light, pigment, or cloth- can affect us at levels we are only just beginning to understand. Light and Color Therapy are both a science and an art. At Integrative Life Solutions we utilize both.
| | Origins of Color Therapy
The origins of color therapy are rooted in several traditions. Ayruveda, an ancient form of medicine practiced in India for thousands of years uses the energies inherent in the colors of the spectrum to restore balance in the body. The Egyptians built healing temples of light four thousand years ago, bathing patients in specific colors of light to produce different effects. In traditional Chinese medicine each organ is associated with a color. In the healing techniques of the Buddhist tradition color and sound are used together. Some of the early studies and theories about light were done by Aristotle, Plato and Pythagoras. During the Middle Ages, Paracelsus reintroduced the knowledge and philosophy of color using the power of the color rays for healing along with music and herbs. Although ridiculed in his own times many of the theories he researched are the foundation for today’s therapies.
To understand color therapy you must understand color. Color therapy is based on the understandable scientific principles of light and color and their biological, psychological, and emotional and spiritual effects on human beings.
What is color?
In 1676 Sir Isaac Newton found by passing sunlight through a prism, the seven colors of the rainbow and recognized that color comes to us in the form of powerful electromagnetic energy.
| | | | | | | | Color is a form of radiation as are x-rays, ultraviolet rays, and microwaves. The difference is that the radiation of colored light is visible to us. Various frequencies of the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, from 700 to 400 nanometers, are known to us as the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Each of these colors has its own properties, purpose, and effect on living organisms. We see the mix of all color radiation as white light or daylight when combined.
How we see color
We are able to see individual colors because of a process called selective absorption. All substances, including the human body, selectively absorb only the energies they need from light. The energy that is not needed is reflected from the surface rather than absorbed. It is this reflected portion of light energy that we see as color. | | | | Consider a red apple, for example. We see an apple as red because the only light energy not absorbed by the apple is the red frequency. The energy of orange, yellow, green, blue and violet are absorbed by the apple and are used as its necessary nutrients in order to live and grow. The red energy is not needed by the apple and is reflected rather than absorbed, allowing us to see the apple as red.
| | | | |
| Light, which contains the full spectrum of color, is a basic human nutrient and is absorbed by the human body in order to live and grow. Consider how good you feel on the first sunny spring day. After a long winter of short daylight, your body feels relief and rejuvenation through its exposure to the sun’s nutritious light. Indeed, light is our very life-force. As colors are the components of light, you can understand the importance and implications of color therapy.
Of course, just as every person is different, so are our color needs and reactions. Research shows that a blindfolded person will experience physiological reactions under different colored rays. In other words, the skin sees in Technicolor. Noted neurophysiologist Kurt Goldstein | | | | confirmed this information in his modern classic The Organism, where he notes that stimulation of the skin by different colors creates different effects.
How we "feel" about color is more than psychological. The last decade has proven that lack of color, or more specifically, light, causes millions to suffer each winter from a mild depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Because of the complex way in which exposure to various colors acts via the brain upon the autonomic nervous system, exposure to a specific color can even alter physiological measurements such as blood pressure, electrical skin resistance and glandular functions in your body. And they most certainly can affect how you feel on a day-to-day basis. Learning about color's qualities and putting it to use can enhance your spirit, improve your health, and quite ultimately, expand your consciousness.
Color Therapy
Holistic healthcare providers who practice color therapy often relate the seven colors of the color spectrum to specific areas of the body known as the chakras. In yoga, the chakras are specific spiritual energy centers of the body. The therapeutic action of colors is related to the chakra they represent:
Chakra is the Western version of the Sanskrit ‘cakra,’ which means ‘wheel’ or ‘circle.’ Chakra is based on the idea that the energy of the body is centered through seven main points in the middle of the body that move in a circular pattern, creating the aura of the body. These seven chakras have specific functions and chakra colors that develop and promote energy for a healthy life. Each chakra has its own specific chakra color and energy.
| | | | The first of the seven chakras is Muladhara. This is the root chakra located at the base of the spine and pelvic area. This chakra energy point is the basis of human survival, it is the foundation of primitive needs such and the foundation of the human spirit. Muladhara’s chakra color is red. The color red has long been used to show passion and desire. As the chakra color, red governs the basic human desire: to survive. The Muladhara chakra energy signifies the desire to eat, to have warmth and shelter and to feel protection from strife. These are the strongest and most basic of human desires and balanced chakra energy here will create calmness. This is also the chakra color that is related to bone strength, blood circulation, the immune system and the lower intestines. The chakra color of red can bring passion and desire into a bland or melancholy life. Minerals that represent the base chakra color of red are red garnet, black obsidian and smoky or red quartz |
| | | |
| The second of the seven chakras is Svadhisthana. This chakra energy exists at the belly button or navel. This is where the human center of sexual desire and emotional connection exists. The Svadhisthana chakra color is orange. The chakra color of orange represents vitality and celebration. Orange chakra energy reflects the desire for feelings, discovery and sexual appetite. The body organs governed by this chakra color are the reproductive and urinary organs. Orange stones such as tiger (or cat’s) eye and carnelian can help one feel revitalized and strong. | | | | The third of the seven chakras is Manipura. This chakra energy is located at the solar plexus and is colored yellow. The Manipura is the center of the human will, integrity, personal empowerment and identity. This chakra color is yellow. The chakra energy for the Manipura is related to the digestive system, upper intestines and liver. This chakra color signifies the physical energy of the sun manifested as self-will, intentions and self-direction. The stone associated with the yellow chakra color is citrine | | | | | | The fourth of the seven chakras is Anahata, which exists above the heart. This chakra color is green or pink and is significant of love, inner balance, compassion for others and emotional expression. The chakra colors of green signify personal ideals, inner nurture and forgiveness of the self and of others. The Anahata chakra is responsible for the heart, arteries, blood circulation and breasts. The chakra color green can bring calmness in times of turmoil, which helps lessen stress on the heart. Minerals associated with this chakra color are malachite, jade and quartz. | | | | The fifth of the seven chakras is Vishuddha, which is located at the throat. Vishuddha chakra energy is related to speaking, expression and communication. This chakra color is blue. This chakra rules over the throat and glands of the throat, the mouth and the ears. The Vishuddha chakra energy is used for personal expression in speaking, such as during speeches and communication. It is the manner in which people connect through communication. The minerals involved in the throat chakra are sodalite, azurite, azanite and kyanite. The chakra color blue can help one express inner thoughts and emotions, as well as increase interpersonal communication. |

| The sixth of the seven chakras is Ajna, which is located on the forehead between the eyebrows. This is the third eye and chakra energy here is colored indigo It is responsible for the mind, foresight, self awareness and intuition. This is the third eye and the indigo chakra energy can bring inner peace, visions and develop the imagination. The third eye chakra energy rules over the brain, central nervous system, pineal and pituitary glands. The chakra color indigo can help meditation, thinking, up lift low spirits and develop spiritual awareness. The common mineral for the chakra color indigo is lapis and fluorite. | | | | The final of the seven chakras is Sahasrara, also called the crown chakra. This chakra energy is located at the crown of the head and is the point of wisdom and understanding. This chakra color is represented by the color violet in most western systems. Violet is the highest color in the visible spectrum. This color is known as one of the "cool" colors. It has a very calming effect on us and is, therefore, very helpful for those people experiencing sleep difficulties or stress. However, it can be contra-indicated for those suffering from depressive disorders.
In eastern traditions the seventh chakra is represented by the color white which signifies that it is the culmination of all the chakra colors. Weak seventh chakra energy here may cause indifference and general malaise. The crown chakra energy develops the

The chakra colors white and violet can help induce faith, inspiration, courage and spirituality. Both colors are used in religious faiths and ceremony. The minerals that represent this chakra color are amethyst, opal and clear quartz.
Chakra colors have been around for a very long time. They have helped lift spirits, increase the mind and improve bodily functions. Meditating on the inner chakra energy can help identify weaknesses in chakra colors. Combating weak chakra colors takes patience and sometimes outside help, as well as placing the corresponding chakra color around the body. Wearing chakra colors in their base form and various gems and minerals that match accordingly can help lift the chakra energy and general feeling of dispirit. For example, if one is frustrated about speaking at a public engagement, wear the chakra color blue to increase the physical and spiritual ability to speak. If one feels weak and tired, revitalize the spirit with the chakra color orange.
Therapeutic color can be administered in number of ways. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine wrap their patients in colored cloth chosen for its therapeutic hue. Patients suffering from depression may be wrapped in reds and oranges chosen for their uplifting and energizing properties. Patients may also be bathed in light from a color-filtered light source to enhance the healing effects of the treatment.
Another method of color therapy treatment recommended in Ayurvedic medicine is to treat water with color and then drink the water for its purported healing properties. This is achieved by placing in the desired colored glass container or placing translucent colored paper or colored plastic wrap over and around a glass of water and placing the glass in direct sunlight so the water can soak up the healing properties and vibrations of the color.
Color may also be used environmentally to achieve certain calming or healing effects. Paint, wall and window treatments, furniture, and decorative accessories may all be selected in specific color families. Clothing may be chosen in specific colors for its healing properties.
Color therapy can be used in conjunction with both hydrotherapy and aromatherapy to heighten the therapeutic effect. Spas and holistic healthcare providers may recommend color baths or soaks, which combine the benefits of a warm or hot water soak with healing essential oils and the bright hues used in color therapy.
Because color is composed of different light frequencies, certain types of music and sound therapy are sometimes used as a companion to the treatment by holistic healthcare providers. One such method, known as the 49th Vibrational Technique, uses a mathematical formula to translate the inaudible vibrations produced in the color spectrum to their audible counterparts. Red is associated with the musical note G, orange is A, yellow is A#, green is C, blue is D, indigo is D#, and violet is E. By combining both visual colors and their audible frequency counterparts, the therapeutic value of the color frequency is thought to be enhanced.
